Dictionaries and Encyclopedias
- New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians
- The most comprehensive English language music encyclopedia. Grove's consists of articles by noted authorities, including complete lists of composers' works and extensive bibliographies. Step 1 of any music research project. (Music Ref. ML 100 N48 2001)
Currently available also is the online version of the New Grove, which will be continually updated. There are also print versions of the New Grove Dictionaries of American Music, Musical Instruments, Jazz, Opera and Popular Music.
- The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Music
- Provides thousands of entries on musical terms, instruments, works, composers, librettists, musicians, singers and orchestras. (An eResource in the Dartmouth College Library).
- Baker, Theodore. Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians.
- Consists of extensive articles about musicians, including bibliographies and lists of works. Notable for its sense of humor and unusual facts and anecdotes. (Music Ref. ML 105 B16 2001)
Periodical Indexes
- International Index to Music Periodicals (IIMP).
- Draws its current content from more than 375 international music periodicals, and also indexes feature music articles appearing in The New York Times and The Washington Post. Started current indexing in 1996, and is in the process of retrospectively adding material going back to the 19th century. The current citations include abstracts (summaries). (An eResource in

- Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI).
- A multidisciplinary index to the journal literature of the arts and humanities, covering 1,150 journals from 1987 to the present. Gives not only citations, but helps you to trace the bibliographic links between the items (who has cited whom). Accessible online only through the World Wide Web through ISI's "Web of Science". - the Dartmouth College Library).
- The Music Index.
- Arranged like the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, this index covers all aspects of music as found in over 300 journals. This is a must for research, however, note that recent monthly issues have not been cummulated into annual indexes.
Print copy 1949-: One-year cumulations (1949-1978, 1989-2000) or two-year cumulations (1979-1988). 2001- as monthly issues. Usually runs a few months behind. (Music Ref. ML 118 .M84)
- RILM Abstracts of Music Literature.
- An international quarterly journal devoted to abstracts (summaries) of current literature on music (abstracts in English), including some in periodicals not indexed by Music Index.
