Media Course Reserves

Jones Media Center provides access to video and other media reserves materials in support of teaching and learning.  Anyone with a library account may view media reserves materials in the media center, located on the second floor of Berry Library.  See our schedule for opening and closing timesViewing stations are equipped to play DVD, VHS, high definition, and foreign standard formats.  Students may also use media reserves at an editing station to create presentations and video projects.  Copyrighted materials may be used under fair use guidelines and only for educational (non-profit) purposes.  For more information consult the Dartmouth Copyright Policy.

Patrons may borrow one item at a time, for up to three hours.  Borrowing reserve materials for class viewing or research is allowed with permission from the instructor who first requested the title for reserves.  Faculty should send permission via email to Jones.Media.Center@dartmouth.edu.

For Students:

Two ways to access your course reserve list: Course reserves list displays:
  • All items on reserve for the class, including books, articles, music and films
  • Online versions of media (as requested by the professor) - available from the "All Streaming Media" link
Accessing Online Reserves:
  • Viewing online video requires sufficient bandwidth (on campus, use Ethernet instead of a wireless connection) and the latest version of QuickTime or VLC Player.
  • Use the Dartmouth VPN for off-campus access to online videos and other electronic library resources.
  • If you experience difficulty viewing online media, try clearing your browser cache, resetting cookies, and reloading the page before asking for help.

For Faculty:

  • Requests for media reserves should be made well before the start of the upcoming term, or as soon as a syllabus has been determined. We greatly appreciate notification in advance.  Download the media reserves request form.
  • To order new titles for the library collection, please contact your subject specialist.
  • Materials at the media center and online remain on reserve for the duration of the term, through the last day of final exams.
  • Faculty may grant permission for another professor to use their reserve material in class by sending a brief note to: Jones.Media.Center@dartmouth.edu.
  • All media prepared for online access must be owned by Dartmouth College Library or a College department. Online access may be requested for required viewing assignments and must be limited to 10 films or episodes per course, per term. Our policy is in compliance with the Dartmouth Copyright Policy & Guidelines which state, in part:

C. Video/DVD Recordings

Meeting the following guidelines, video/DVD recordings may be placed on electronic reserves or on course web sites for use in connection with course instruction:

  1. A commercially available copy of the video/DVD is owned by or licensed to Dartmouth College; OR Dartmouth has ordered a commercially available copy of the video/DVD; OR a lawfully obtained copy of the video/DVD recording is owned by the course instructor and Dartmouth has made a good faith effort to purchase a commercially available copy.
  2. Entire works shall be made available only of works that are being taught in the course and that are assigned to students for a specific class meeting. The number of entire works that may be digitized during an academic term shall not exceed the maximum number of works typically required for the course: approximately 10 items or 20 hours. Excerpts, not entire copies, should be used when possible.
  3. Online access to course materials shall be limited through authentication to class participants. Video must be delivered in streaming format.
  4. Access to the files shall be disabled at the completion of the course but course files may be stored for future re-use in accordance with these guidelines.
