Audio Recording Devices

Jones Media Center carries a variety of audio equipment. The basic Olympus audio recorders work well for most projects and are loaned on a walk-in basis. Advanced equipment is available but must be requested ahead of time and requires a 15-minute training session.

Olympus Digital Audio Recorders

These small digital recorders are great for most recordings. The Olympus records in the Windows Media Audio (.WMA) file format. The built-in USB terminal allows for easy file transfer to your computer. Macintosh users can convert .WMA files using the SWITCH Audio Converter, QuickTime Pro, or Audial Hub available in the center.

Olympus LS-10 Professional Audio Recorder

The Olympus LS-10 is a pocket-sized digital recorder recommended for projects that require professional sound quality. With linear PCM (.WAV) recording capabilities at sampling rates of up to 24bit/96kHz, the LS-10 captures sound in extra-high quality.

Marantz PMD 660 Audio Recorder

The Marantz PMD 660 records to a compact flash card in uncompressed WAVE (.WAV) stereo format. The unit is portable, but larger (8" x 4" x 1.5") than the Olympus LS-10 (5" x 2" x 1"). This device is recommended ONLY for recordings that require the use of external microphones, such as interviews using a hand-held microphone, recording live music with professional microphones, or recording a line-level signal from a sound board. The PMD 660 has two XLR inputs, 1/8" line in/out connections, phantom power, and runs on AA batteries or AC power.

Sony Cassette Tape Recorder
