Li Zhu Appointed 2008-09 Digital Media Intern

Posted 7/31/2008

Li Zhu has been appointed to the Internship in Digital Media in the Jones Media Center for 2008-09. She replaces Helen Kang, who completed her tenure as an intern and will spend the next year in China studying animation on a Fulbright Fellowship.

Li Zhu, who prefers to be called Julie, graduated from the MALS program at Dartmouth in June with a concentration in Cultural and Media Studies. Her thesis was entitled: "Exploring the Representational Triad Space: Reading Hong Kong Identity in Johnnie To’s Triad Films."  Julie received her B.A. degree in Editing, Directing and Broadcasting from Communication University of China. After finishing her undergraduate program she was an intern for the Encore International Media Group and a production assistant for Korean filmmakers in China. She has also worked as an intern at the Nanjing TV Station and for the Beijing Broadcasting Institute's campus magazine during her college years. While a student at Dartmouth, Julie was a student assistant in the Rauner Special Collections Library and in Cataloging and Metadata Services in Baker-Berry Library. She has been vice-president for the Chinese Scholar and Student Association at Dartmouth and a volunteer for a Katrina Relief trip sponsored by the Tucker Foundation in 2006.

The Digital Media Internship provides an opportunity for a recent Dartmouth graduate to spend a year learning digital media technology and exploring careers in librarianship. The intern works directly with students, faculty, staff and alumni who are creating digital media projects for a variety of educational and extracurricular applications.

Jones intern wins Fulbright Fellowship

Posted 6/19/2008

Helen H. Kang, who has been the Digital Media Intern in the Jones Center this year, has won a Fulbright Fellowship to study film animation in China.

Helen completes her internship in Jones next month and at the end of August will travel to China to do research on Chinese animation at the Beijing Film Academy (BFA) and the Shanghai Animation Studios.

Helen's interest in animation grew out of her academic work at Dartmouth where she received her B.A. degree in 2006 with a major in East Asian Studies and minor in Chinese. She also took courses in animation, documentary filmmaking, and film studies. She took a particular interest in Chinese animation and worked closely with Professor David Ehrlich, a renowned animator. She published an article in the "Animation Journal" about a "Brush-Painting" animation technique developed in China. She later took elements from the "Brush-Painting" animation technique to develop her own animation, which was screened as part of the Annual Animation Festival at Dartmouth on May 27th.

During the past year in Jones, Helen taught workshops as part of the "Tuesday Afternoons in Jones" series, assisted faculty and students with multimedia projects, streamlined the process for requesting and checking out equipment, prepared physical and streaming reserves, and assisted with updating the Center's equipment inventory.

Next month Helen will present a poster at the New Media Consortium summer conference at Princeton University on effectively communicating information about facilities and services available in college and university media centers.
