Viewing Stations:

Viewing station

DVD, VHS & CD-ROM

The Jones Media Center provides individual stations for viewing videos in many formats. Videos on reserve must be watched in the media center. There are 20 viewing stations equipped with computers, VCRs and DVD players available on a walk-in basis. Individuals or small groups may use a viewing station for up to three hours at a time.

A viewing room (Berry 276) is available for groups of 5 to 12 students. This room has a video projector, iMac, document camera, VCR and DVD player. To use the viewing room, please submit a request at least 24 hours ahead of the requested time. In the request, include your name, class name, and the title of the film(s) you want to view, or a brief description of your project (for example "practice PowerPoint presentation"). Please remember that there is a no food or drink policy in the media center, including the viewing room.  Request the viewing room.

Microform

ScanPro microtext scannerScanPro microtext scanner

ScanPro scanners are available to view our extensive microform collection of popular newspapers and magazines, journals, and government documents. Users can save microtext to an electronic document (PDF, JPEG, or TIFF) for later viewing, or print to the College GreenPrint service. The ScanPro can be used to view and save microfilm (35mm and 16mm), microfiche, ultrafiche, and microcard (opaque card).

Editing Stations:

Editing station

Jones Media Center maintains 17 digital editing stations with Macintosh computers. These workstations are equipped to import both digital and analog sources and allow users to create, edit, and review digital media projects. Editing stations are available on a walk-in basis at the Media Services Desk.  Patrons may use an editing station for up to three hours at a time, with renewals allowed on a space-available basis.

Project Room:

JMC Project Room

The Project Room is equipped for independent patron use.  This facility is for advanced editing using the Final Cut Pro software suite. The Project Room can also be used to digitize media from a variety of formats, including DVCAM, miniDV, DVD, VHS, SVHS, LaserDisc, and audio cassette.

To request the project room please complete the Scope of Project form.

Media Labs:

Faculty and staff may use the Digital Media Labs for specialized media projects including exhibits, presentations, grant proposals, and academic publishing projects. The sweetening and mastering facilities offer access to specialized equipment, engineering assistance, and training. To request a media lab please complete the Scope of Project form. Prior to lab use, a training program and overview of the facility will be scheduled.

Labs provide equipment for digitizing domestic and foreign media, including:
  • HD, DVCAM, miniDV
  • DVD
  • VHS, SVHS, C-VHS
  • Sony BetaMax
  • Betacam SP, ¾-inch, ¾-inch SP
  • Hi-8, Digital Hi-8
  • Film: 8mm, Super-8, 16mm
  • Audio cassette
  • Reel-to-reel audio tape: ¼-inch 2 track, ¼-inch 4 track, ½-inch
  • Digital Audio Tape (DAT)
  • Vinyl records 33 to 100 RPM
  • Wire recordings and other antiquated audio formats

Examples of Recent Projects:

Reformat:
Transfer antiquated formats and foreign media needed for classroom use.
Reformat ¼ reel-to-reel audio to digital files for use on a server.

Master:
Multi-media presentation for national conference: adjust audio for presentation impact and consistency of volume, and adjust video levels to insure proper signal for projection

Edit & Publish:
Excerpt analog and digital media, edit excerpts to create a digital portfolio used in a national grant application in support of funding for programs at Dartmouth.
Reformat vinyl records and 16mm film to digital files, edit and adjust content for publication used in Alumni class presentation.
