GIS Poster Contest

GIS Poster Contest

To again promote the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) software across the campus, the Geography Department, Academic Computing and the Libraries are sponsoring the Third Annual GIS Poster Contest. The entries are due by Friday, November 16, 2007. We will display them in the Evans Map Room on November 30, 2007.

The annual, nationwide GIS Day is November 14, 2007 during Geography Awareness Week. The Week begins on November 11th and ends on November 17th. Dartmouth College typically celebrates GIS Day a week early to allow people on campus to attend other GIS Day events in the Twin States or further away if they wish.

Winners of First and Second Annual GIS Poster Contests.

Criteria

  1. Teams of 1 to 3 people maximum are allowed. Some people prefer to work alone and others enjoy group activities. A maximum of 3 people ensures that everyone involved contributes.
  2. All teams must fully use one canvas sheet measuring 36"x36." On this sheet of paper, emphasize the resulting geographic data and map(s) you create. Do not include the process of your decision making. Use the explanatory sheet for that. Think MAP and use the entire sheet to show your map(s).
  3. The use of spatial data is required. Without spatial data, there is no GIS.
  4. The use of spatial data created for another project is allowed. We do not require teams to purchase spatial data. That is your own decision. However, before you consider purchasing spatial data, please check the resources available in the Evans Map Room.
  5. All entries must include one 8.5x11" sheet of explanatory text. This sheet should detail the team's various decisions on why they chose their particular data sets, any problems they encountered while creating the poster and what they hope to show with the data and poster. If you do not include the explanatory text with your poster, you will lose points.

Eligibility

All current Dartmouth College students, undergraduate and graduate, are eligible. The ArcGIS software is available for download from Computing's web site. Be aware that you must be running Windows 2000 or XP Professional to install ArcGIS.

Due Date

All posters must be submitted electronically to the Evans Map Room Friday, November 16, 2007. There are no exceptions. Please submit your entry electronically to the Evans Map Room using the following e-mail: map.room@dartmouth.edu. Don't worry about printing your poster. We will print them for you.

Judging

The judging will include a panel of 3 to 5 judges critiquing all of the posters.

Prizes

We will award monetary prizes for the top 3-4 entries. The number of prizes is dependent on the number of entries. All of the entries will be displayed in the exhibit cases located on the 1st level of Berry Library during January and February 2008.

Sponsoring Departments

Geography

Maps are integral to Geography. Using GIS lets geographers visually display how humans change the Earth for their use. The Geography Department has the Rahr Lab for its students to use GIS

Academic Computing

Academic Computing provides departments with support in dealing with new technologies of all types. Their web site hosts the download for ArcGIS.

The Libraries at Dartmouth College actively pursue and collect resources in all formats to aid and enhance research for faculty, students and staff. The Evans Map Room in particular collects resources for using GIS.
