Research Resources

This guide provides a starting point for research. It covers selected interdisciplinary resources. Many additional resources can be found in the Dartmouth Digital Library. The Digital Library offers integrated access to library services, electronic resources, catalog, course reserves and digital initiatives. It contains a variety of tools for research. The eResources section of the Digital Library is a subset of electronic resources including: Subject Guides, Indexes & Abstracts, Databases, Electronic Journals, e-Books, etc. Digital Library eResources are accessible by subject folders. Folders are developed by Dartmouth College subject specialist librarians. The eResources folders for Environmental Studies and Geography may provide a useful access point for research. Use the Dartmouth Library Catalog to identify and locate books, government documents, journals, maps, videos, etc. Search by author, title, subject headings or keyword. Access Indexes to identify individual articles.

Subject Headings - Use Library of Congress Subject Headings to target your searches in the Dartmouth Library Catalog. Discover additional subject headings that relate to your topic. Some suggested subject headings:

Subject Headings

Ecofeminism
Environmental Aspects
Environmental Degradation
Environmental Ethics
Environmental Justice
Environmental Health
Environmentally Induced Diseases
Environmental Policy
Environmental Protection
Environmental Responsibility
Environmental Risk Assessment
Hazardous Waste Sites
Human beings -- Effect of environment on
Human Ecology
Human Geography
Minorities
Pollution -- Environmental aspects
Poor
Social Ecology
Waste Disposal Sites
Water quality management
Water Supply

Searching by subject is more specific,
keyword searching is broader. A combined subject and keyword search is possible
(use keyword access and "s:" for the heading).

Subject Search Examples:
Hazardous Waste Sites -- Location

Keyword Search Examples:
s:African Americans and environment
environmental racism
environmental injustice
environment and minorities
environmental equity
green socialism

Note: using a boolean "and" limits a search, and "or" broadens it.

Choosing Resources - Points to consider when choosing resources to use in your research:

—- Dates covered (many online or Web indexes and databases go back to the mid-80's; consult the print version for materials before the online index began; find print
index by title in the online catalog or consult a librarian)

—- Subject areas covered

—- Types of source materials indexed. Does the index cover popular magazines or scholarly journals? Does it also include government reports, statistical data, maps?

—- Types of material within the source indexed. Does the index include book reviews, editorials, corrections, and other matter outside of the full research reports or
articles?

—- Numbers of source publications indexed-this gives you an indication of how much you may have to limit a search due to large retrievals.

—- Language-English only or many languages? You may need to limit a search to English-language-only materials in databases that contain foreign language material
such as GeoBase.

—- Are there special searching features that you might need such as cited reference searching, citation links, geographic search features, limits to review articles.

—- Are you searching full-text in the database or reference information only? Are there links to full-text?

Topical Approach to Research - A topical approach may be useful to chart a path for research in the multidisciplinary realm of this course.
