B. Finding Books in the Library Catalog

Search the Dartmouth library catalog to locate books, journals, and other items in the collections of all the Dartmouth libraries. Search by subject (using Library of Congress subject headings) or keywords; you can also search by author, or by title.

For best results, try to come up with multiple ways of describing your topic ranging from very specific to more general.

Many bibliographic databases, including the library catalog and many article indexes, use assigned terms to describe the subject content of materials. These subject terms (subject headings) can help you focus your search with great precision.

Economic Development - Environmental Aspects
Environmental Ethics
See also: Environmental Responsibility
Environmental Policy
Industries - Environmental Aspects
Environmental Policy - Case Studies
Environmental Economics
Environmental Management - Case Studies
Developing Countries - Environmental Conditions
Property Rights Instead use: Right of Property
Global Climate Change Use: Climactic Changes
International Trade - Environmental Aspects
Sustainable Development
Takings Instead use: Eminent Domain
Transboundary Pollution

Tip: Note that the results of a subject search are listed alphabetically, by default. For reverse chronological order (most recent first), choose "Limit/Sort," then "Sort Results by Year."

Another Good Tip: if you're not sure of the exact Library of Congress Subject Heading, use a Keyword search to locate a few items that are relevant to your topic. Then use the Subject Headings associated with those items to lead you to more relevant materials.

Example:
The keyword search "green business" leads you to several books (here's an example) that suggest an additional search term, the subject heading "Industries - Environmental Aspects"

Keyword searches can be made to search for your terms in specific fields (subject, author, title) by using field tags ( s: or a: or t: ) . With a little creativity, you can use this technique with great success, as shown here
(example: s:right of property and taking* )

C. Finding Journal and News Articles Using Indexes

Articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers can be found using article indexes (searchable databases of article records). In many cases these indexes link through to full-text articles (look for the ArticleLinker icon ArticleLinker Logo); if not, use the Library's Catalog to locate the source of the article. Note that the Catalog does not contain records for individual articles.

Article not available at Dartmouth? Try DartDoc. (Also see the section, Getting Items Not Available at Dartmouth.)

Selected indexes relevant to environment sciences and environmental economics are listed here. See eResources for a complete listing of electronic indexes, databases, and other eResources licensed by Dartmouth.

ABI / Inform An index to articles in English language business periodicals worldwide. Covers advertising, marketing, economics, human resources, finance, taxation, computers, and more. Includes information on 60,000+ companies.

Web of Science
1900- present

Covers 5,900 journals in the basic and applied sciences, including earth and environmental sciences; also chemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics and computer science. Covers 1945-present (1901-present for articles from a select list of 250 very influential journals).

Search features include: keyword searching across multiple disciplinary areas, links to citing and cited articles, a "related records" search, and novel ways to analyze and sort your search results.

WilsonWeb

The Wilson indexes are somewhat general, thus are great for multidisciplinary topics. Another advantage is that they cover a smaller (more manageable) subset of the journal literature, and they cover many of the key journals in several science disciplines. They can be searched individually or together (to search across all subfiles, click on the link above). Among the subfiles are:

Index to Legal Periodicals and Books
1981 to the present
Cites articles from more than 615 legal periodicals, including law reviews, bar association journals, university publications, yearbooks, and more. Covers all areas of jurisprudence, including recent court decisions, new legislation, and original scholarship.

Social Sciences Abstracts
1983 to the present
Indexes about 350 journals in international studies, physical and human geography, history, political science, the environment, and economics -- a broad array of social sciences journals. Packs a lot of coverage into a relatively small article database.

E. Writing, Citing and Managing Your References

Help with Writing

The Dartmouth Writing Program's online resources page provides help with all aspects of composition.

The Student Center for Research, Writing & Information Technology (RWIT) trains student tutors to assist with paper topics, research assignments and multimedia projects.

Help with Citing

Style guides provide accepted standards to follow when preparing research papers for publication. Sources is the Dartmouth College general guide to citing sources, and contains required reading about plagiarism and when, and how, to cite material you are using for a paper or presentation.

The official title of the APA Style Guide is the
Publication manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th ed. (2001).
Baker Berry Ref. BF76.7 .P83 2001 (also: copies at other campus libraries)
Earlier editions that can be checked out are available in the stacks (Baker-Berry BF76.7 .P83)

Diana Hacker's site, Research and Documentation Online, provides useful and well-organized examples of many types of references in the major citation styles. The site is the companion site to A Writer's Reference, 5th ed. (Bedford St. Martin's Press, 2003), by Diana Hacker.

Lexis-Nexis provides this guide to citing materials found on its site: Citing References from Lexis Nexis Academic
(the examples are equally appropriate for references found through Lexis Nexis Environmental.)

Citing Legal Sources

For detailed guidance, consult the Publication manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th ed., which contains explicit instructions on citing legal sources (see Appendix D, References to Legal Materials, pp. 397-410). The following guide may also be useful:

Citing Legal Materials in APA Style - a detailed guide from the Westfield State College Library

Software Tools

Reference management programs allow you to build a personal database of your references to articles, books, websites - any information source - and then easily create bibliographies and reference lists using any particular style, without having to retype or reformat. See this overview of reference management programs widely used at Dartmouth.

RefWorks
RefWorks is a web-based reference management program that allows users to create their own personal database of references by importing references from online article databases. RefWorks makes it easy to search, sort, and cite these references in writing papers and then to automatically format the paper and the bibliography. To get started with RefWorks, go to http://www.refworks.com and click on the "User Login" button on the menu bar. Then click on the "Sign up for an Individual Account" link and fill out the form. RefWorks in-context help, or the online tutorial, will guide you through the basics. See the overview for details on importing citations from various article databases into RefWorks.
