FINDING ARTICLES IN SCHOLARLY JOURNALS and News Sources

Individual articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers can be found using article indexes (searchable databases of article records). In many cases these indexes link through to full-text articles; if not, use the Library's Catalog to locate the source (journal, magazine) of the article. (Deciphering journal abbreviations ... )

Selected indexes relevant to environmental chemistry are listed here. See eResources for a complete listing of indexes, databases, and other electronic resources licensed by Dartmouth. Still not sure where to start? Try Search360 to search multiple article databases with one search!

WilsonWeb (from start page, use checkboxes to select which subfiles to search)

The Wilson indexes below are somewhat general, not specific to chemistry. Their advantage is that they cover a smaller (more manageable) subset of the journal literature, and they cover many of the key journals in chemistry. They can be searched individually or together (to search across multiple subfiles, click on the link above.)

Applied Science and Technology Index
1983-present
Indexes about 570 technical and applied science journals, covering Chemistry, Engineering, Physics, and Mathematics. Journals indexed include: Environmental Science and Technology, American Water Works Association Journal, Journal of Chemical and Engineering Data, Chemical and Engineering News, Analytical Chemistry.

Biological and Agricultural Index
1983-present
Indexes about 300 journals in Agriculture, Agricultural Chemicals, Biochemistry, Biology and Ecology, Environmental Science, Microbiology, Plant Pathology, Soil Science. Journals indexed include: Biochemistry, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Environmental and Experimental Botany. About 45 percent of the database’s focus is on agriculture.

General Science Abstracts
1984-present
Indexes about 235 journals, covering all the sciences, including Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of Chemical Education, Journal of Organic Chemistry, JACS, Science, Scientific American, and Nature.

Web of Science
1945-present
some articles back to 1900

Web of Science indexes about 8000 journals in all subject areas.

This database is unique in that it tells you who has cited a particular paper, which is useful as a way to find related papers, and to track the influence of a particular paper. You can also search by topic, and the index is very up-to-date. Especially useful for interdisciplinary fields like environmental chemistry.

SciFinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts)
1907-present

SciFinder Scholar is the client software used for searching Chemical Abstracts, the CAS Registry database, and several other chemical information sources.

The primary index to the chemical literature, CA indexes articles, as well as many conference papers, dissertations, patents, and chapters from books. About 8000 chemistry-related journals are covered, with 1600 "core" chemistry journals indexed cover-to-cover. All areas of chemistry are covered, and all languages are included.

There are several ways to search SciFinder Scholar:

Author, Research Topic, Chemical Structure, Chemical Reaction, and Chemical Substance.

For a quick introduction to searching SciFinder Scholar, see SciFinder Scholar How-To Guides from CAS.

The indexes below cover the environmental literature from a variety of sources, including government reports, news sources, and legislative and regulatory information.

Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management
This subject collection (available through Cambridge Scientific Abstracts) includes several relevant subfiles, which can be searched individually or together (to search across all subfiles, click on the link above). Among the subfiles are:

Toxicology Abstracts
1981-present
A small, specialized index, Toxicology Abstracts indexes toxicological studies of industrial and agricultural chemicals; food, additives and contaminants; household products; pharmaceuticals; polycyclic hydrocarbons; nitrosamines and related compounds; and numerous other substances. Toxicity testing methodology and analytical procedures for toxic substances are also covered.

Pollution Abstracts
1981-present
Pollution Abstracts provides coverage of scientific research and government policies related to pollution. Specific areas covered include air pollution, marine and freshwater pollution, sewage and wastewater treatment, waste management, land pollution, toxicology and health.

Water Resources Abstracts
1967-present
Water Resources Abstracts indexes journal articles, papers, books and government reports on all aspects of water resources and water quality, primarily fresh water. Ground and surface water are both included.

Lexis-Nexis Environmental
A diverse collection of environmental source material that includes several subfiles:

  • Environment Abstracts, an index to environmental journals, conference papers, and government reports;
  • News, Journals and Commentary, environmental news from major daily newspapers, newsletters, and law reviews.
  • Codes and Regulations, with federal and state legislative and regulatory material; and
  • Case Law and Agency Actions, with federal and state environmental case law and decisions from regulatory agencies and departments.

Deciphering ABBREVIATIONS OF JOURNAL NAMES AND ORGANIZATIONS

Acronyms, initialisms, & abbreviations dictionary
Kresge Ref. PE1693. G3
Useful for finding out the full title of journals and magazines, and the names of organizations.

PubMed's Journal Browser
Enter the journal name, MEDLINE abbreviation or ISSN. You may also enter a single word from the journal title or several adjacent words in the title.

MANAGING YOUR REFERENCES / CITING SOURCES

Style guides provide accepted standards to follow when preparing research papers for publication.

The ACS style guide : effective communication of scientific information (3rd ed.)
Kresge Ref. QD8.5 .A25 2006
The American Chemical Society publishes a style manual to guide authors through the approved methods when preparing a manuscript for publication. It includes information on preferred use of terms, illustrations, presentation of data, etc. "The definitive source for all information needed to write, review, submit, and edit scholarly and scientific manuscripts."

Sources
Dartmouth College's general guide to citing sources in all subject areas.

Reference management programs allow you to build a personal database of your references to articles, books, websites - any information source - and then easily create bibliographies and reference lists using any particular style, without having to retype or reformat. See this overview of reference management programs widely used at Dartmouth.

RefWorks
RefWorks is a web-based reference management program that allows users to create their own personal database of references by importing references from online databases (eg SciFinder Scholar or Web of Science). RefWorks makes it easy to search, sort, and cite these references in writing papers and then to automatically format the paper and the bibliography. You can create more than one account, so can create shared accounts for group projects.
