Searching by subject is more specific, keyword searching is broader. A combined subject and keyword search is possible (use keyword access and "s:" for the heading).

Subject Search Examples:

Volcanic Activity Prediction

Keyword Search Examples:

Cascades and Volcan*
s: Mount Saint Helens and Eruptions and Economic*
Pinatubo and Mud
Ring of Fire and Volcan*
Stratovolcanoes
Shield Volcanoes
Vulcanology

Note: using a boolean "and" limits a search, and "or" broadens it.

Choosing Resources - Points to consider when choosing resources to use in your research:

—-> Dates covered (many online or Web indexes and databases go back to the mid-80's; consult the print version for materials before the online index began; find print index by title in the online catalog or consult a librarian)

—-> Subject areas covered

—-> Types of source materials indexed. Does the index cover popular magazines or scholarly journals? Does it also include government reports, statistical data, maps?

—-> Types of material within the source indexed. Does the index include book reviews, editorials, corrections, and other matter outside of the full research reports or articles?

—-> Numbers of source publications indexed-this gives you an indication of how much you may have to limit a search due to large retrievals.

—-> Language-English only or many languages? You may need to limit a search to English-language-only materials in databases that contain foreign language material such as GeoBase.

—-> Are there special searching features that you might need such as cited reference searching, citation links, geographic search features, limits to review articles.

—-> Are you searching full-text in the database or reference information only? Are there links to full-text?

Topical Approach to Research - A topical approach may be useful to chart a path for research.

Catalogs of Active Volcanoes

Resource Comments
Volcanoes of North America : United States and Canada / compiled and edited by Charles A. Wood and Jürgen Kienle 1990 Kresge Library QE524.V66 1990
Volcanoes of the World
"...primary source of information about active volcanoes, their names, location; dates, character of past activity and estimates of the magnitude of eruptions."

This resource has information on large holocene eruptions back to ~9850 BC
"...compiled by Smithsonian volcanologists over the past three decades and represent an updated electronic version of Volcanoes of the World (Simkin and Siebert, 1994)"

Field Trip Guides

Print
Field-trip guidebooks are an excellent, and often the only, source of detailed information on the geology of a small area. Field-trip guidebooks are frequently one of the printed results of a geological conference, since most conferences, from the national Geological Society of America conference to regional meetings, sponsor field trips. Some guidebooks are included in GeoRef, but another good source is: Union List of Field Trip Guidebooks of North America Online The latest edition is on the Web, and the latest print edition is in Reference: REF/ Z6034/ .N65/ 1989 You can identify which guidebooks have information on a particular geographic area or geologic formation. The guidebooks are listed by sponsoring organization, and libraries that hold the guidebooks are given, also, which makes it easier to locate the guidebooks.

Virtual
A variety of virtual fieldtrips can be found online. Here are some examples:

National Park Service
Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument
Cascades National Park

National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration
Axial Seamount Virtual NEMO tour

Stromboli Online
Stromboli
Kilauea
Mount Saint Helens
Erta Ale
Vesuvius

Presentation Pointers

This recent Dartmouth Biomedical Library Grand Rounds seminar PowerPoint: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly has some presentation pointers. This seminar points out that: Content, Context, Clarity, Delivery & Thought Provoking [nature] are each important considerations in creating good presentations. Some additional points to consider:

* proper crediting of graphic/visual/audio material
* balancing of graphic to textual material
* weighing stylistic aspects: "show & tell" vs."dog and pony show"

Evaluating, Citing & Managing Sources

Evaluating Resources

"Testing the Surf: Criteria for Evaluating Internet sources."

"Beyond the Basics: Searching Tips & Techniques"

Citing Sources

Sources Their Use and Acknowledgement (Dartmouth College)

* Citing Global Volcanism Program information:
The following is quoted from Global Volcanism Program website:

"For most general uses, data should be attributed to the Smithsonian Institution, Global Volcanism Program. For formal scientific citation of the Holocene volcano and eruption data, please use the following:

Siebert L, Simkin T (2002-). Volcanoes of the World: an Illustrated Catalog of Holocene Volcanoes and their Eruptions. Smithsonian Institution, Global Volcanism Program Digital Information Series, GVP-3, (http://www.volcano.si.edu/gvp/world/)."

The Composition Center offers tips on writing the academic paper.

Managing References - Two methods are available to you for managing your citations and creating bibliographies:

RefWorks
Create an account, and manage your citations with this web-based product. View this workshop guide for additional help using RefWorks.

EndNote
Download this software from the Dartmouth public server and manage your citations libraries on your hard drive.
