About DCIS/WWW
The Dartmouth College Information System (DCIS) is a joint project of the Library and Computing
Services providing access to Dartmouth's campus-wide information resources. DCIS information
resources service academic, administrative and daily living needs. For example databases such as the
Dartmouth Library Catalog, subject related periodical indexes, a collection of reference works, the
full text of many well known literary works, the course catalog, job opportunities and purchasing
information are included.
DCIS is a client-server based system developed around a shared network search and retrieval protocol. DCIS can be used either from this Web gateway or by downloading the DCIS 2.0 client application. DCIS 2.0 runs on both Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating systems. Most features are supported in either interface. The desktop clients are faster and provide additional display features.
In order to use DCIS on the WWW, your browser must support forms. Much of the DCIS database collection is licensed from publishers and is therefore accessible ONLY to current Dartmouth College faculty, students and staff. These individuals will need authentication software to access restricted databases via the WWW. Information in the public domain is available to any Internet user. Read the DCIS Help pages for instructions on using the interface.
The directory of DCIS databases on the WWW can be viewed either grouped "by category" or alphabetically "by name". Database links lead either to forms which construct database searches or to other web sites and telnet based systems. The database directory includes descriptions of each database which can also be searched.
DCIS was developed and is maintained by Information Systems, Dartmouth College. Local databases are supported by the Dartmouth College Library and Academic Computing. The Kerberos software (KClient and SideCar) were developed by Cornell University and enhanced by Dartmouth Computing Services.
DCIS is Copyright 1990-1999 by the Trustees of Dartmouth College.
