How to connect from
off-campus
RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic reference manager that is available to Dartmouth faculty, staff, and students.
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
Where can I get RefWorks? RefWorks is available on the web at http://www.refworks.com. Simply click on the User Login button on the tool bar and use the "Sign up for an individual account" link. Download the Write-N-Cite application to facilitate citing references from RefWorks into research papers in Microsoft Word. There is no charge to you for using RefWorks, Write-N-Cite, or setting up a RefWorks account.
Searching
the Catalog with RefWorksYou can search the Library Catalog using RefWorks. This is by far the the easiest way to get citations from the Library Catalog into RefWorks. It is also one of the most accurate - it does a very good job of putting the various data elements into the correct fields within RefWorks. This means your citations will format properly when you generate your bibliography.
To search the Library Catalog with RefWorks, log on to RefWorks and click on the "Search Online Database" button in the left-side tool bar. Choose "Dartmouth" from the pop-up menu and use the available search form. Other library catalogs are also available for searching using RefWorks, and are available through the pop-up menu
Important: At this time, RefWorks does not import Library Locations, Call Numbers, or Status information from the Dartmouth Library Catalog.
Importing citations from the Catalog into RefWorksYou can also import citations into RefWorks that you have exported from the Library Catalog and other online databases. Please note that RefWorks does not import Library Locations, Call Numbers, or Status information.
Step One: Export the records from the Catalog
Search the Library Catalog and save the desired records. For details
on how to save records for export, follow this link.
Saved records should be exported Local Disk in the Full Display format. Records exported to "Screen" cannot be imported into RefWorks.
Exporting records to Local Disk:
Choose the Full Display format and send the list to Local Disk using the available radio buttons. Your computer will automatically export it as a text file with a .txt extension.
Step Two: Import the saved records
into RefWorks
Now that your records have been saved to your computer as
a text file, you can import them into RefWorks.
Click on the Import button in RefWorks. You will be presented with a dialog box.
Using RefWorks Off-CampusYou can use RefWorks any time you are connected to the Internet - even if you are off-campus and not directly connected to the Dartmouth network. Just use the Dartmouth Subscriber Group Code. It is listed in the registration confirmation message you received from RefWorks when you created your account. If you cannot find your registration confirmation message, contact Baker/Berry Reference from your Dartmouth BlitzMail account. We will then send you the Subscriber Group Code.
RefWorks SupportPlease refer to the RefWorks help page for information on how to use RefWorks. If you have further questions about RefWorks, contact Baker/Berry Reference or Kresge Library Reference.
