About RefWorks

RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic reference manager that is available to Dartmouth faculty, staff, and students.

Advantages:

  • It's free to Dartmouth students, faculty, and staff.
  • You can get to your RefWorks files from any computer connected to the Internet from the Dartmouth College and DHMC domains. If you are working off-campus and not connecting to Dartmouth through the modem pool, you can use Dartmouth's Subscriber Group Code to access your account.
  • Use RefWorks to search the Library Catalog and import references.
  • Format your citations according to any number of style formats, such as Turabian, Chicago Manual of Style, or Science.
  • Works with Microsoft Word to format the footnotes and bibliographies in your research papers.
  • Import and export RefWorks citations to and from other reference managers, such as EndNote.

Disadvantages:

  • You will need to edit records in your RefWorks library to get the references to format properly.
  • It is necessary to take the time to learn how to use RefWorks.

Back to TopSearching the Catalog with RefWorks

You can search the Library Catalog using RefWorks. This is by far the the easiest way to get citations from the Library Catalog into RefWorks. It is also one of the most accurate - it does a very good job of putting the various data elements into the correct fields within RefWorks. This means your citations will format properly when you generate your bibliography.

To search the Library Catalog with RefWorks, log on to RefWorks and click on the "Search Online Database" button in the left-side tool bar. Choose "Dartmouth" from the pop-up menu and use the available search form. Other library catalogs are also available for searching using RefWorks, and are available through the pop-up menu

Important: At this time, RefWorks does not import Library Locations, Call Numbers, or Status information from the Dartmouth Library Catalog.
