Charge

The working group will:

• Identify current and future options for system-wide management of the Library’s on-campus and off-site collections;
• Investigate alternative access models to the collections;
• Recommend collection development policy changes to accommodate future growth.

The working group will present its findings to the Library Management Group, subsequently advising the Library Administrative Group.

Members of the working group will represent the library-wide areas of: Access Services, Collection Management & Development, and Preservation. Staff from other areas of the library will be consulted as needed.

Short Term (by Jan. 1, 2009)

  • Identify and illustrate the current environmental and collection management needs in the areas of: shelving and storage space for print and non-books collections; the special needs for rare book, manuscript, and archival collections; operations and services; and digitization projects.
  • Identify overlapping interests on campus and regionally among higher education institutions.
  • Identify collection storage options and cost models at Dartmouth, regionally, and nationally.

Long-Term (> 1 year)

  • Review collection development and selection policies and how those policies affect the management of our collections. What and how do we collect? What do we retain? What access alternatives are available?
