The Creation of the Buckingham Award.

  1. The Dartmouth College Library Staff Association Executive Board voted at its May 2011 meeting to create a Merit Award to be given to an individual for outstanding service to the organization, by one of its own members.
  2. The Dartmouth College Library Staff Association then voted at its May 2011 meeting to name the new Merit Award the Sarah Jo Buckingham Award in honor of Sarah Jo Buckingham, a librarian at Dartmouth College, who passed away in 2010.
  3. The former Scholarship Committee was then renamed the Scholarships and Award Committee and was duly charged with handling the disposition of the Buckingham Award each Fall.

The Guidelines for the Buckingham Award.

  1. No member of the Scholarships and Award Committee is eligible for the Buckingham Award. This remains in effect for one calendar year after they serve on the Scholarships and Award Committee. This is so there should never be appearance that the Scholarships and Award Committee members are giving to themselves an award. Potential new members should be informed beforehand that any service on this standing Committee precludes their receiving this Merit award in the future for one year.
  2. The Scholarships and Award Committee meetings are open to all library staff members.
  3. The Scholarships and Award Committee will present to the President of the Dartmouth College Library Staff Association a list of three potential recipients no later than August 1st of each year.
  4. The four elected officers, the President, the Vice President, the Treasurer, and the Secretary will meet in August to discuss and vote on each year’s recipient. In the event of a tied vote, the Chair of the Scholarships and Award Committee will cast a deciding vote. The current elected officers are themselves ineligible for that year’s Buckingham Award.
  5. The four elected officers may choose to reject the list provided to them by the Chair of the Scholarships and award Committee and request a new list from the Scholarships and Award Committee. They can decline the list and come up with a list of their own.
  6. The Buckingham Award does not have to be bestowed each year.
  7. The President of the Dartmouth College Library Staff Association will give to the Chair of the Scholarships and Award Committee, and the Buckingham family liaison, the name of the year’s Buckingham Award recipient by August 15 of each year or two weeks before the Service awards Banquet, or else notify the Chair of the Scholarships and Award Committee that there is no winner for that year.
  8. The Chair of the Scholarships and Award Committee will arrange to have a suitable Award for presentation to the recipient, either a small trophy or plaque.
  9. The Chair will submit the expense for the trophy or plaque to the Staff Association Treasurer for payment.
