Goals and Objectives (FY12)

Goal 1: Develop a culture of continuous improvement through ongoing assessment of Library activities and programs.

  • No priority initiatives for FY12.

Goal 2: Provide physical and digital environments that advance research and education.

  • In FY12, participate in planning for new Innovations Center which is intended to house the Biomedical Libraries and The Dartmouth Center, replacing Dana and Gilman.
  • In FY12, build a long-term repository system that will integrate local digital collections into the Library's information environment. In FY13, evaluate the effectiveness of the resulting infrastructure against national best practices.
  • During first quarter FY12, create a project plan to address priorities identified in the May 2011 Storage Planning Group Report. Throughout FY12, begin to realize goals established in plan.

Goal 3: Recruit, develop, and retain exceptional staff committed to our service culture and philosophy.

  • In FY12, articulate and create structures for organizational change to support staff transitioning to new roles and responsibilities. In FY13, assess staff engagement and satisfaction with new roles, the effects of these changes on Library users, and the ability of our organizational structures to enable change.

Goal 4: Develop information resources and services that support research and education at Dartmouth.

  • In FY12, build a robust digital production process for local collections that implements selection, prioritization, and production policies, and creates a collaborative staffing structure. In FY13, evaluate the impact for users of the resulting digital collections.
  • In FY11 and 12, support expanded collaborative collection development with BorrowDirect partners in a variety of subject areas. Review collection development policies to ensure that priority is given to resources that the Library is responsible for collecting. Give digitization priority to uniquely held materials, in order to share digital surrogates with the Borrow Direct community.
  • By Summer 2011, complete the recommendation for a replacement system to control both College records and Archives/Manuscript holdings. By Fall 2011, clarify the use of the system in regard to other campus document management tools and articulate an implementation plan. Complete installation and pilot implementation by March 2012.
  • Beginning in FY11, initiate changes to collections services and workflows to reflect the growing dominance of digital materials and tools in our collections. In FY11 and 12, carry out reviews of the Save the Time of the Reader recommendations, the PACC elimination goals, and paper serials maintenance procedures.

Goal 5: Build collaborations to support faculty and graduate and undergraduate student scholarly publishing.

  • In FY12, work with the Dartmouth Digital Information (D2I) committee to understand College needs for long-term storage and sharing of faculty scholarly output.

Goal 6: Teach members of the Dartmouth community to be effective users and producers of information to meet their current academic needs and prepare them for a lifetime of learning and of responsible leadership.

  • In FY12-13, collaborate with faculty and programs to identify key points in students' academic lifecycles and implement strategic interventions at two of those points.
  • In FY12, Library and Computing staff will work on new collaborative initiatives to support faculty, as part of the Integrated Faculty Support Team. In FY13, assess the effectiveness of the new model, and recommend areas for improvement.

Goal 7: Provide leadership and support for College initiatives and priorities.

  • By June 2011, migrate Library personnel to Microsoft Online Services. In FY12 assess new opportunities to combine service offerings through the new communications infrastructure.

Goal 8: Effectively market the Library's information resources and services to all the Library's communities.

  • No priority initiatives for FY12
