The cultural and social upheaval which marked the early years of the Soviet Union was highly conducive to the acquisition of imperial Russian art treasures, which the Soviet government in the period between the two world wars was very eager to sell. Many American collectors took advantage of this opportunity, including Ralph Sylvester Bartlett, Dartmouth College Class of l889. This exhibit focuses on Bartlett's place among American collectors of Russian imperial art, highlighting his influence on the development of Russian studies and collections at Dartmouth, and showcasing books and objects from his large bequest to Dartmouth. The physical exhibit took place in Baker Main Hall, Baker-Berry Library, from October 1- December 10, 2008.
The Book Arts Prize is given every year in recognition of excellence in the creation of a book made using the hand processes of the Dartmouth College Library's Letterpress Studio.
The physical exhibit was mounted in the Treasure Room Hallway display cases (near Baker Library Adminstrative Offices, Room 115).
