[Retrieving Materials] [ Policies] [On- Site Use] [About the Storage Library]

Retrieving Materials from Storage:

  • Registered library patrons may request material by using DartDoc or by using the "Request Selected Item" feature in the library catalog.
  • Storage Library materials may be available for use by visitors. Contact the Baker-Berry Reference Desk for assistance. Email or Telephone: 603-646-2704.

Request Selected Item (Preferred for requesting books):

  • The "Request Selected Item" button appears within the full display of each title record in the Dartmouth College Library Catalog. For more information on requesting an item through the Library Catalog, please consult the Dartmouth Library Catalog Help.

DartDoc (Preferred for requesting PDF or photocopies):

  • Access the DartDoc system through Library Services on the Dartmouth Libraries Home Page (first time users will need to register for access to Document Delivery and Interlibrary Loan). Enter the bibliographic information into the appropriate request form (book, article, etc.).

Policies:

  • Storage requests are limited to 12 items per patron, per day. Please check with the Circulation Desk if your needs exceed this guideline.
  • Photocopies of articles or book chapters may be delivered on paper or electronically (a PDF file). A bound serial volume may be delivered instead of a photocopy at the discretion of the Storage Library: for example, articles exceeding 30 pages.
  • Requests are processed Monday - Friday, in the order received at Storage; expect 1-2 working days for your request to be delivered. The Storage Library is closed evenings, weekends and all College holidays.
  • Delivery is made to the Circulation Desk of your choice. Microform will be delivered to the Jones Media Center for viewing and printing.

On-Site Use:

LOCATION: Route 120, Hanover NH 03755
HOURS: Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM - BY APPOINTMENT ONLY
PHONE: (603) 646-3091
EMAIL: Storage.Library@Dartmouth.edu
DIRECTIONS: Click Here for Directions

Materials may also be used at the Storage Library itself. Registered Library Patrons may visit the Storage Library to view materials, particularly if they would like to see many different items at one time, or if they have a significant amount of photocopying that they would like to do. While the Storage Library is generally open to the public on a daily basis, this is not assured and patrons must make an appointment at least one working day in advance.  The Storage Library is closed evenings, weekends and all College holidays.

Visitors wishing to consult a large number of items should email, fax, or phone this information to the Storage Library prior to their arrival. In this way, some of the materials can be waiting in the conference room when the visitor arrives.

Material cannot be checked out from the Storage Library, but may be designated to be delivered to another library during a visit. Generally this material can be delivered with the next courier delivery either the same or next day.

About The Storage Library

The Dartmouth College Library is a research collection with holdings of approximately 2 million volumes. As a research library we are committed to building a collection that serves the immediate and long term scholarly needs of the user community. Accordingly, we acquire material in many formats and retain the vast majority of items added to the collection.

Many years ago space became a critical problem for the Library. The problem was addressed by constructing the Storage Library in 1982. Choosing an off-site storage facility was seen as a practical, cost-effective way to house lesser used or at-risk material as well as a means of freeing space for new acquisitions within campus libraries. It was recognized at the outset that additional storage space would be required in the future. After several years of planning, the Storage Annex opened in the Summer of 1992. It affords us much needed space and the opportunity to make more effective use of that space.
