Call Numbers from OCLC Records

Scope

Describes how Innopac handles call numbers within imported OCLC records. Provides guidelines on adjusting call number fields in Innopac in records from OCLC.

Content

Introduction

A change to Innopac download tables affects the way that call number fields in OCLC records will be stored and indexed in Innopac. This represents a change from the way that call numbers were formerly being handled upon Export.

OCLC BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORD HAS LC CALL NUMBER IN 050

Innopac will store and index the 050 field as a call number. There is no need to change the record or the tags.

OCLC BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORD HAS LC CALL NUMBER IN 090

Innopac will store and index the 090 field as a call number. There is no need to change the record or the tags.

OCLC BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORD HAS LC CALL NUMBER IN 050 AND ANOTHER LC CALL NUMBER IN THE 090

Innopac will store and index the 090 field as a call number. The 050 field will not appear in the Innopac record. If you want to use the call number in the 050 field instead of the one in the 090 field, you must delete the 090 field before Exporting. If the contents of the fields are identical, do not change the record.

OCLC BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORD MAY OR MAY NOT CONTAIN 050/090 FIELDS -- WE INPUT A NON-LC CALL NUMBER IN THE ITEM RECORD (949|b)

Innopac will store and index the contents of the OCLC 949|b as a call number. The call number will appear in the item record (950|b). The index used will be determined by the indicators set in the 949|u (e.g. |u95004). HOWEVER, IF AN LC CALL NUMBER APPEARS IN 050 OR 090 IN THE OCLC BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORD, IT WILL BE TREATED AS ABOVE.

If you are inputting a non-LC call number for a serial title (e.g. "Journal" or "Serial") you should leave the 090 and/or 050 in the OCLC bibliographic record, or input one if it is missing. This is because we hold a place in our shelflist for non-classified journals/serials.

If you are inputting a non-LC call number for an electronic resource (e.g. a URL) you should leave the 090|a and/or 050|a in the OCLC bibliographic record, or input the base number (050b4|a) if it is missing.
