Donating Books and Other Material to the Biomedical Libraries

The Biomedical Libraries accept gifts of books and other materials in the health and life sciences that contribute to the research, education, or patient-care activities of Dartmouth Medical School, Dartmouth College, and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. The Libraries' acceptance of gift material is subject to the same criteria for addition as apply to purchased material and the Libraries reserve the right to accept or refuse prospective donations. See the collection development policies in Medicine, Biology, and Nursing for the criteria.

To donate books and other material, contact Peggy Sleeth, Associate Director/Information Resources, by email or 603-650-1635, with a description of the proposed gift.

Please note:

  • Material is accepted without limitation by the donor as to how it may be used, shelved, or disposed of.
  • The Libraries may discard or sell unwanted items received. We work with Better World Books to sell donated and discarded books; a portion of the proceeds goes to the Libraries and is used to purchase new books, and another portion goes to a foundation that promotes literacy.
  • If arranged in advance, unwanted items will be returned to the donor.
  • We do not appraise gifts for tax purposes, nor do we pay for appraisals.
  • We will acknowledge the extent of the gift in a letter, if desired. If you want the letter to include an itemized list of the donated material, please provide your own list.
