Classification-Location Assignments Guidelines

Classification-Location Assignments

The assignments of Library of Congress Classification numbers to specific libraries aim to meet the following goals:

  1. Ensure system-wide collection development;
  2. Provide general guidelines on collection location;
  3. Minimize duplication of library materials between library units;
  4. Expedite the processing of materials in technical services.

At the same time it is evident that there is a need for flexibility and a recognition that aspects of some subjects are of interest to more than one library unit. To that end, four principles govern the assignment of LC numbers for newly ordered materials and gifts:

  1. Material needed for Reference collections will class in the library originating the order.
  2. Material in LC ranges where more than one library has an interest in collecting will class in the library originating the order. Dual interest is indicated for those call number ranges where a clearly defined breakdown could not be established. Dual interest does not necessarily indicate a duplication of material but reflects aspects of a shared classification range.
  3. Material of significant importance to the ordering library may be classed by exception in the ordering library. However, the newly agreed-upon assignments should stand unless a definite need for the exception exists.* If, upon cataloging, a title ordered by a library will class outside the Primary Assignment and Dual Interest for that location, the selector will be alerted to determine location for the item. In cases where shelving arrangement requires it, Cataloging and Metadata will provide an alternative class number. (Only for Art Library; all others accept A-Z range.)
  4. The Collection Management and Development Committee will review the assignments as needed and problems of specific call numbers should be discussed at its meetings.

For the most current call number assignment table please go to the Collection Services Call Number Assignment Reference page on the Cataloging and Metadata site.
