Benjamin Franklin and `The Stol'n Kiss'

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN arrived in Paris on the 21st of December 1776 to become, with Silas Deane and Arthur Lee, one of three American commissioners sent to France by Congress in hope of obtaining aid from that country. In March 1777, Franklin established himself at Passy, a charming village outside Paris. Among his duties was the frequent, time-consuming one of answering requests for letters of introduction or recommendation to accompany travelers or businessmen to America. So it was that Franklin was asked, in December 1777, for such letters by John James(Jean Jacques le jeune) Doerner, a French banker, who planned 'to establish a House of Commerce at Charles-town North America.' The original manuscript of the request is preserved in Special Collections (MS777600), a gift through the Friends of the Dartmouth Library of Mr. Perc S. Brown. This utterly prosaic piece, measuring to 5 x I6 cm., would be of only minor interest, were it not that on the reverse there is an untitled love-poem, written in ink by Franklin; it consists of three quatrains of octosyllabic lines with numbers superimposed on the words of the first quatrain only (Fig. 1).

Belinda, se, from yonder Flow'ers,
The Bee flies loaded to his cell:
Can you perceive what he devours?
Are they impair'd in shew or smell?

So thô I robb'd you of a Kiss,
Sweeter than their ambrosial Dew;
Why are you angry at my Bliss?
Has it at all impov'rish'd you?

'Tis by this Cunning I contrive,
In spite of your unkind Reserve,
To keep my famish'd Love alive,
Which you inhumanly would starve.

In the recent publication of the manuscript in The Papers of Benjamin Franklin it was rightly assumed that Franklin had not composed the poem himself, but had copied it, probably for the purpose of using it 'in his flirtation with Mme. Brillon.'1 Among the ladies of Paris who idolized him was Madame Anne-Louise d'Hardancourt Brillon de Jouy (1744-1824), to whom Franklin had been introduced in early 1777, while 'by late 1777 and through 1778 it [the relationship] grew into an intense flirtation.' 2 The 'amité amoureuse' caused the suitor's 'perennial complaint . .. that she was too demure,' her kisses 'were too precious,' and she was 'too stingy with them.' 3

Two questions have so far remained unanswered: where did Franklin copy the words from and 'why did he count syllables in the first stanza?' 4 Further inquiry in this regard has established that the song first appeared in Number 473 of The Spectator on Tuesday, 1 September 1712, having been contributed pseudonymously by William Pulteney (1684-1764), who became Earl of Bath in 1742. As Franklin was quite familiar with The Spectator, especially in his early years,5 it is possible that he copied the poem directly from one of the editions of the magazine in book form, or he may have found it in one of many contemporary miscellanies of verse. The poem was set to music by William Hayes (1708-1777) and published in 1735 as the eighth of twelve songs; Hayes gave it the title 'The Stol'n Kiss' and added 'The Words taken out of ye Spectator.' (Fig. 2)6 Knowing how important a role music played at the twice-weekly visits Franklin paid to the Brillon household, this musical version may have been used for copying. Madame Brillon was a much accomplished musician, both as player of the harpsichord and pianoforte and as composer; Franklin especially enjoyed listening to simple songs. 7

These possibilities would still leave the question of the syllable count. It may simply have been to check whether the count of each line added up to the total of eight. In prosody of eighteenth century poetry, strict adherence to a consistent syllabic-count was paramount, and poetic contractions (elisions) were much used to this end. In this regard, Franklin elided 'Flowers' to 'Flow'ers,' which would make for a two-syllable word instead of `Flow'rs,' a one-syllable one as required to come to a total of eight syllables for the line.

Of interest is that Franklin called the worker honeybee by the wrong, male, gender: 'his cell' and 'he devours,' the text of the song using 'its' and 'it.' Aristotle's surmise of a king-bee as the governor of the community of the honeybee (Apis mellifera) was not refuted until the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. In England this was done by Charles Butler in his famous The Feminine Monarchie, which was published at least four times in English and several times in Latin. 8 Butler observed that a queen-bee rules the hive, while the drones are male. In 1637, Richard Remnant established that worker honeybees are female.' 9 Franklin must have been aware of these observations at the time he copied the poem. This would imply that he made the change intentionally, identifying with the bee, but to what purpose?

It undoubtedly relates to Franklin as suitor for the affections of Madame Brillon; his letters to her abound in allusions to Madame's coyness in matters sensual. `You renounce and exclude arbitrarily every thing corporal from our Amour, except such a merely civil Embrace now and then as you would permit to a country Cousin. . . .'10 `My poor little Boy [Cupid] is meagre and starv'd almost to , death for want of the Substantial Nourishment which you his Mother inhumanly deny him. . . .'11 'Saturday evening, I shall stay with you until you long for my departure, and in spite of the usual courtesy of your spoken words, I shall know that the time to leave has arrived when you will refuse me a little kiss.' 12 `You, who are as rich as an Archbishop in all Christian and moral virtues, you could sacrifice for my sake a little portion of those virtues without the loss being sensible, but you tell me it is asking too much. Such is your charity toward an unfortunate who used to enjoy plenty and is now reduced to begging your alms.' 13

This small item, then, allows a glimpse into the friendship of the septuagenarian American commissioner and his favorite among the younger ladies of Paris.
