| The Romanization of Spain began in 218 BC when Roman troups were sent to southwest Spain to prevent Hannibal from receiving Spanish reinforcements for his war against Rome. Poulsen's book, which describes the cultural life of the Romans, includes an interesting chapter about Roman women. Aggripina (pictured here) was the powerful and duplicitous woman who married her own uncle, Claudio, whom she subsequently poisoned in order to govern by herself on behalf of her son Nero. Eventually Nero condemned her to exile and then to death.
