Arabs

Titles in this category cover a broad spectrum concerning the impact on Spain of the seven hundred years of Arab ocupation. Hardly an institution in Spain escaped untouched: race, language, music, art, literature, architecture, and even religion.

Her laws, government, military matters, relationships between man and woman, and relations with the rest of Europe were all irremediably affected, in varying degrees, by this alien culture. The impact on education, philosophy, agriculture, and on eating and other living habits can be discerned and traced. Also among these books are many on the history of Arab days, their wars, their literature, the monuments which they left behind, their medicine, and their coins. Much additional material may be found in the regional histories - particularly those of the Andalusian area.

Selections

This volume is an excellent study of the Arab monuments in Granada. The Puerta del Vino was one of the entrances to the Alhambra, palace and fortress of the Moorish monarchs of Granada.

The Alhambra was built chiefly between 1238 and 1358, in the reigns of Ibn al-Ahmar, founder of the Hasrid dynasty and his successors. After the expulsion of the Moors in 1492, much of the interior was effaced. Remains of Puerta del Vino are extant.
