Berry Library Time Line
Construction of the new Berry Library, set to begin in the summer
of 1998 and be completed three and a half years later, will produce
both a new Baker-Berry Library and a new academic hall which will
become the home of the History department.
Along the way, the project will also entail a series of departmental
moves. The building sequence has been developed specifically to
ensure that these moves minimize impact on library and computing
services for the college.
The present timeline for the overall project and the departmental
moves is as follows:
- Summer 1998-June 2000:
-
- Berry Library construction underway.
- Utilities under Elm Street to be relocated to new utility tunnel
along north wall of existing Baker Library.
- June 1999:
-
- Psychology department moves from current offices in Gerry and
Silsby to new home in Moore Hall.
- Gerry and Bradley remain in place until new home can be built
for math department.
- Summer 2000:
-
- Berry Library dedication.
- Kiewit machine room, data and video network headends move to
lower level of Berry Library.
- Most Baker Library services and many collections move to Berry
Library.
- Kiewit is demolished with Gerry temporarily used for some Computing
Services departments.
- Summer 2000-December 2001:
-
- Baker Library undergoes renovation to complete the Baker-Berry
plan.
- Academic hall under construction as wing of Berry Library.
- January 2002:
-
- History department moves from Reed Hall to new academic hall;
new classrooms in the academic hall become available for use.
- Library and Computing Services occupy their new locations in
Baker and Berry libraries.
At this point, the new Baker-Berry library complex will be a functioning
reality, and Dartmouth will have realized its goal of a "library
of the 21st century."
