Information Specialist Visits Petrozavodsk

Fred Pond, a Biomedical Librarian from Dartmouth Medical School, will be working at the Karelian National Library and the Scientific Library of Petrozavodsk State University from 14 May to 12 June 2001. His visit is supported by the US National Library of Medicine.

Fred is happy to work with doctors, teachers and students as well as librarians. For anyone who is interested, Fred will give workshops and demonstrations on medical databases that can be accessed from the Internet. These include MEDLINE, MEDLINEplus, TOXLINE, and AIDSLINE as well as full text databases such as MDConsult and EBSCO.

MEDLINE
Covers the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and preclinical sciences. MEDLINE contains more than 11 million bibliographic citations and author abstracts from more than 4,000 biomedical journals since 1966. Coverage is worldwide, but most records are from English-language sources or have English abstracts. Fred will demonstrate how to search MEDLINE, save your searches for later use, and connect to full text articles if they are available.

MDConsult
Contains the full text of 35 current medical fact books and over 50 medical journals. Fred will show how to find what you need to keep up-to-date with health care news, clinical practice guidelines, patient education and drug information.

AIDSLINE
Research, clinical aspects and health policy issues regarding HIV and AIDS. This database includes journal articles, government reports, letters, technical reports, meeting abstracts/papers, books, theses and audiovisuals from 1980 to the present time.

TOXLINE
Toxicological, pharmacological, biochemical and physiological effects of drugs and other chemicals. This database covers journal articles, monographs, technical reports, theses, letters, meeting abstracts, papers and reports from 1965 to the present.

MEDLINEplus
Provides current consumer health information, including dictionaries, directories, organizations, news sources and 400 health topics. MEDLINEplus gives access to extensive information about specific diseases and medical conditions and also has links to consumer health information from the US National Institutes of Health.

EBSCO Full Text
Provides access to over 2,300 full text academic and popular interest periodicals on culture and the social sciences. It covers eight major health-related subjects that include adult health, behavioral health, cardiology, drug and medication information, pediatric health, senior health, women's health and sports medicine.

High Quality Medical Information on the Internet
Fred will show you how to find information on a wide variety of health-related subjects on the Web that has been selected by experts.

Learn from Fred how to access Web-based resources on evidence-based medical practice, including clinical practice guidelines and other useful tools for disease management.

Other Training on Demand
Fred can provide instruction on finding literature related to other subjects such as History of Medicine, Bioethics, Population Studies, and Aeronautics and Space.

Fred enjoys meeting people, cooking and tasting the food of Russia. He looks forward to learning about Russian culture. He likes gardening and would welcome visits to the Russian countryside to learn how people plant their vegetable gardens. His athletic interests are running, walking, hiking and cycling. He would like to find a running partner.
