Joan Acocella is well known as the dance critic for The New Yorker and as the author of books on dance, literature, and psychology. Publications include Willa Cather and The Politics of Criticism (2000), Creating Hysteria: Woman and Multiple Personality Disorder (1999), and Mark Morris (1993), a critical biography of the choreographer. She also edited the new, unexpurgated Diary of Vaslav Nijinsky (1999) and André Levinson on Dance (1991). Acocella has served as a senior critic and the reviews editor for Dance Magazine and as the dance critic for The Wall Street Journal.
