Nike
Davies-Okundaye is one of a few internationally known
Nigerian women artists. Trained as a weaver, dyer and
batik maker, Davies-Okundaye uses a variety of media
to express themes from her life and from the Yoruba
culture into which she was born. She is also the founder
and director of the Nike Center for Arts and Culture,
which trains young artists in visual as well as musical
and performing arts.
Davies-Okundaye will visit Dartmouth for a 9-day residency
beginning November 11th, 2002, in conjunction with a
Hood Museum exhibit of her works to open November 16th.
Davies-Okundaye's visit will include activities sponsored
by the departments of History, Religion and Music, as
well as textile workshops and teachers' conferences.
