Eli Zaretsky is Professor of History at the New School for Social Research. He was the founder and editor from 1969-1976 of the Socialist Review. He is the author of Capitalism, the Family and Personal Life (New York: Harper and Row, 1976; revised and expanded edition with a new Afterword published in 1986), a groundbreaking book that has been translated into a dozen languages. His new book, Secrets of the Soul: Psychoanalysis, Modernity and Personal Life, will be published by Knopf.
