Behind the broad ditch lining Mikailovsky Street is a field where the schoolboys of the village gather to play their games and fight their small wars.  Though the field belongs not to the school, but to a local merchant, the boys call it “The Schoolyard,” and they gather there whenever something of importance happens in their lives.


Today the schoolyard is full of boys, ranging in ages from 10 to 14.  They are gathered around two key figures, Smurov and Krasotkin, and are listening intently to what the two older boys have to say. Clearly something exciting has just happened…
