What impressed me was the behavior of the woman, Grushenka. When it became clear that they were judging him, she sprang to his defense and shrieked, “Judge us together!…Punish us together, I’ll go with him now even to execution!” (457). It was as if she, before all others, understood that we are all guilty for one another. Just as Magdalene was the first to see Christ resurrected, so now is a woman the first to see the resurrected Dmitri. Women are ahead of us in understanding the power of love, don’t you think?
