Dmitri’s tragic mistake is that he kept a secret. He says again and again that he has a right to his own privacy (464,468,480,489). But in keeping his secret, he has strained his tie with the human community. He misunderstands the most fundamental principle of brotherhood: that we are all guilty before one another. The shame and pride that moved him to keep his secret got in the way of Love. And that was his undoing. It makes me wonder: what other secrets contributed to this awful deed?
