I won’t join with you in criticizing Dmitri.  He has always tipped us well; he has always treated us with genuine affection and respect.  He’s not like other gentlemen in that way.  In fact, I heard the strangest thing from the troika driver.  He told me that Dmitri asked him if he thought that Dmitri was going to go to hell.  And the coachman told him:  “…Though you’re one to get angry…the Lord will forgive you for your simple heart” (412).  And do you know what happened next?  Dmitri asked the coachman for his forgiveness.  And the coachman replied, “Why should I forgive you, you never did anything to me.”  A strange interaction, don’t you think?  What does it all mean?
