Faculty Network
The Security Studies Young Scholars Network
was founded in 2004 by Jennifer Lind, Daryl Press (Dartmouth), and Daniel Byman (Georgetown University). Our goal was to promote networking and scholarly collaboration among young faculty in security studies. Members are scholars whose work relies upon largely qualitative methods to address policy relevant questions in the field of international relations/security studies. We founded the group to address the need to build stronger networks among such researchers; many young scholars emerge from graduate school with close ties to their own classmates (at MIT, Chicago, Columbia, etc.), but are not acquainted with the broader community of scholars doing similar kinds of work. And, many young scholars take jobs at colleges or universities at which there are no other colleagues who work on similar topics, or who use similar methods; one of the group's goals is to give such people a broader scholarly community with which to interact. The group meets twice annually at APSA and ISA. We aim to bolster this interaction in the future with group conferences. It is our hope that networking within this group will support the career advancement of its members by encouraging them to vet their work among one another, to develop co-author relationships, to form conference panels, and to invite each other to give talks and participate at conferences at their various universities. In this way we hope the group encourages junior faculty doing our type of research to see each other as potential allies, co-authors, and friends.
