Spring 08

Film Screening and Q&A with director - Saturday, April 5

"Am Ende kommen Touristen," Along Come the Tourists, 2007, in German and Polish with English subtitles. will be shown at 6 pm in Dartmouth 105, followed by a discussion with director Robert Thalheim.  The film explores the relationship between  a young German who is doing his civil service  in the Polish town of Osweicim (Auschwitz) and an elderly Polish survivor who gives witness testimony to visitors.  Sponsored by the German Department, Jewish Studies, Film and Television Studies, and the Leslie Humanities Center.

Lecture - Thursday, April 10

Daniel Itzkovitz will speak on Unmaking the American Jew: Secularism, Race, and Popular Culture at 4:30 pm in Rockefeller Center II. Prof. Itzkovitz will speak about the "post-Jewish" in the context of American racial politics (in particular, Obama's "post-racial" campaign), recent popular culture, and theories of the secular.  Sponsored by the Jewish Studies Program.

Poetry Reading & Talk - Thursday, April 24

Wrestling with God: A Poetry Reading and Talk by Alicia Ostriker. The poet will discuss and read from her poetry at 4 pm in the Wren Room, Sanborn House, with a reception following.  Sponsored by the Jewish Studies Program. 

Film Screening and Talk - Thursday, May 8

I Have Never Forgotten You: The Life and Legacy of Simon Wiesenthal, narrated by Nicole Kidman,  will be shown at 7:30 pm in 105 Dartmouth Hall.  Rabbi Aron Hier of the Simon Wiesenthal Center Los Angeles will speak.  Sponsored by Chabad of Dartmouth, the Dickey Center, and the Jewish Studies Program.

Concert - Wednesday, May 28

Detroit-Berlin transplant singer-songwriter Daniel Kahn and legendary Moscow avant-garde song bard Psoy Korolenko bring their new project, The Unternationale, folk-klezmer cabaret in English, Russian, and Yiddish, to Faulkner Auditorium ( HOP lower level) at 7 pm for a free concert.  Sponsored by the Jewish Studies Program, the Russian Department, and the Nadezhda T.
