3. Where is the studio?
The Claflin Jewelry Studio is located on the lower level of the Hopkins Center, across the hall from the Paddock Music Library.

4. When is it open?
Hours may vary term-to-term, but in general the studio is open Mon-Sat 1-5 and some evenings 6-9.

5. How much does it cost?
The Hopkins Center Student Workshops require a shop fee of $10/term or $25/year for students and $40/term or $100/year for faculty. This fee covers the use of the jewelry, wood and pottery shops and can be charged to DASH. Users must also pay for their materials (metals, stones, chains) on the day they are used. A typical silver band costs about $2.50; larger projects with gold, diamonds or other precious stones can become expensive.

Polishing Wheels

6. What can I make in the studio?
The Claflin Jewelry Studio is very well equipped and has all the tools necessary for small metalwork. If your piece requires a specialized tool or jig one can often be made in the machine room. Typical projects include rings, chains, pins, pendants and earrings. Students have also produced such varied projects as teapots, candle sticks, belt buckles, bicycles and metal boxes. Numerous wedding bands have been crafted in the shop. Visit our online image galleries to view exceptional examples of student work.

7. How long will a project take?
This depends on the project and how much time you want to spend in the studio. A beginner's first silver band usually takes about an hour. A wedding band, on the other hand, may take a month or more.

8. Who runs the Claflin Jewelry Studio?
The studio is one of the Hopkins Center Student Workshops at Dartmouth College. The shop is currently being led by Jennifer Major and Kerstin Nichols, offering many years of expertise to users. Teaching Assistants – students who instruct users in jewelry making techniques and shop safety – make up the rest of the studio staff.

9. How do I apply for a position as a Teaching Assistant?
Teaching Assistants are trained to instruct other students and do routine shop maintenance. New T.A.s participate in a series of workshops during the fall, so please apply early in your first term. If you are interested in joining our staff contact Jeff Georgantes via blitz for more information.
