From the Great Migration Series: 557

ORIGIN: Unknown

MIGRATION: 1634 on the Mary & John

FIRST RESIDENCE: Newbury

OCCUPATION: Yeoman.

CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Coker's name appears on a list of church members at Newbury in April 1671 [ EQC 4:361].

EDUCATION: Signed his name as constable of Newbury, but made his mark on his will.

OFFICES: Essex petit jury, 27 March 1655 [ EQC 1:381]. Newbury constable, March 1656 [ EQC 1:417].

ESTATE: The town of Newbury granted Robert Coker about nine acres of land (mentioned in an 8 April 1696 deed of son Joseph Coker, referring to "the 132 page of the old town book of Newbury" [ ELR 26:167]). On 7 January 1651[/2], Francis Plumer of Newbury sold to Robert Coker four acres of land there near Coker's land and house [ILR 1:110], and Daniel Pierce and his wife, Katherine, of Newbury sold him 4< acres of upland in the Little Field in Newbury on the same day [ ILR 1:110]. In his will, dated 20 September 1678 and proved 29 March 1681, Robert Coker of Newbury bequeathed to "my eldest son Joseph Coker" his house, outhousing, orchard, upland, and meadow, with the freehold, "(except such parcels of land as are hereafter excepted)"; to "my younger son Benjamin" his land in the little field, being 4< acres, more or less, together with the frame upon it, and also the meadow at Plum Island at Sandy Beach, and six acres of land south of the highway by Robert's dwelling house, for which Benjamin must pay his sister, Hannah Lunt, £12 of the legacy bequeathed to her in this will; to "my daughter Sarah Smith" £40, £9 of which had already been paid to her, the unpaid balance to be paid by "my son Joseph"; to "my daughter Hanna Lunt" £40, £12 of it to be paid by "my son Benjamin ... and what remains that I do not pay in my lifetime to be paid by my son Joseph"; "my eldest son Joseph" to be sole executor, and "my kinsmen Joshua and Caleb Moody together with my son-in-law James Smith" to be overseers [ EPR 3:403-4]. The inventory of the estate of Robert Coker of Newbury, taken 18 December 1680, totalled £601 17s. 2d., of which £486 was real estate: the dwelling house with the barn and outhousing, together with the orchard and eight acres of land adjoining the house, £160; the hill lots on the south side of the house, 17< acres, £105; 4< acres of plow land in the little field, £36; thirteen acres of Dividend Land at the town's end, £20; 29 acres of marsh meadow ground, £145; a frame of a house on the land in the little field, £10; and the freehold to the house, £10 [ EPR 3:404].

ASSOCIATIONS: It is not known how Joshua and Caleb Moody were related to Robert Coker, but their age would indicate that they were possibly nephews. Their father, William Moody, was also a passenger on the Mary & John in 1634, so the two families were very likely from the same part of England.

COMMENTS: "Robert Coker" appears on 24 March 1633/4 on the passenger list of the Mary & John of London, sailing from Southampton [Drake's Founders 70]. "Robert Coaker" of Newbury and "Miryam Kinge" of Hampton were presented for fornication in December 1641 at the Ipswich court [ EQC 1:39], but we have to wait a year to get more of the story. It seems that Robert had "betrothed himself too securely to one maiden, and then contracted with another woman." He was sentenced to be severely whipped and to pay Thomas King, who subsequently married the first maiden, £5 [ EQC 1:44]. Thomas King married Miriam Moulton, the first maiden in the above account. It is possible, but not proved, that Miriam's child whom she had with Robert Coker was Rachel who subsequently became the wife of Christian Dolloff of Exeter and Stratham, who was born about 1639, and therefore would have been close in age to Rachel [GDMNH 198, 401, 499]. Christian Dolloff and his wife, Rachel, were both called "cousin" in Thomas King's will, an odd term to use for a step-daughter but it was a rather clumsy situation. Coker joined other residents of Newbury in 1654 in signing the petition supporting Lt. Robert Pike of Salisbury, but recanted soon afterward [ EQC 1:366-67]. Coker also subscribed to the 16 March 1670/1 order suspending Rev. Thomas Parker 16 March 1670/1 [EQC 4:359], for which he was fined 13s. 4d. [ EQC 4:367].

James and Lydia emigrated to New England in 1630 with the Winthrop Flett with 700 other passengers.346 and first settled in Boston where they were church members and where James took the oath of freemen with his brothers-in-law, John and Jacob Eliot. James was disarmed by the Massachusetts Bay government in November of 1637 because he was supporter of the religious rebels Anne Hutchinson and John Wheelwright. In 1640, the family moved to Mount Walliston (Braintree). James appears to have been a literate and successful small farmer. The inventory of his estate included the following property in Braintree:

a lease hold of Mr. Hoofe's Neck, 15£
a dwelling house, 45£
a barn, stable, old house and orchard, 70£
