General telephone assistance: 1-800-829-1040 (ask for the Technical Division).  When calling this number you may ask questions to help you prepare your return or ask about a notice you may have received.

If you have attempted to deal with an IRS problem unsuccessfully, you can contact their Taxpayer Advocate: 1-877-777-4778.
