Online Tax Preparation Software for Non-Resident Aliens
The International Office is working to help make the filing of the proper
tax forms as easy as possible, however, for liability reasons we are unable to
provide advice about an individual's specific tax situation. We are
providing at minimal cost CINTAX, a web-based tax return
preparation system, to assist international students, scholars and faculty (who
are non-resident aliens for tax purposes) in preparing their 2007 federal tax
returns. The software checks to ensure that tax treaty benefits are taken,
completes the correct U.S. income tax form, either Form 1040NR or Form
1040NR-EZ, prepares additional statements or attachments, and prints all tax
forms. CINTAX can also be used to determine a foreign
national's U.S. residency status in those instances where a student or scholar
is not sure if he or she should be filing as a resident or non resident.
To log into the software you will need a password, which will be provided by
the International Office upon payment of a $3.00 user fee. You may purchase a
password in the International Office between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday
through Friday (Wednesdays from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm) or CINTAX
passwords can be requested through the International Office CINTAX Request
Form or by BlitzMail. During your use of CINTAX you will
have the option to save your information until June 15, 2008 (so that you may
reprint or modify your return), or you may choose to delete your information
after it has been entered. If you decide to delete the information and you
later want to change your tax return, you must obtain a new Password (again
paying the $3.00 user fee) and you will have to re-enter all your
data.
Once you have received your password, you will need the following documents
and information before using CINTAX to prepare your tax
return:
- Forms W-2, 1042S and/or 1099 (if you received any)
- Form DS-2019, if J status
- Form I-20, if F status
- Social security number or ITIN
- U.S. entry and exit dates for current and past visits to the U.S.
- Passport, including Form I-94
- Address information (i.e., current U.S. and foreign address)
CINTAX is an online system, however, it does not file the
tax return electronically. You must print, sign, and mail the tax returns/forms
generated by CINTAX. You should keep a copy of your tax return
once it is filed and all items (W-2, 1042S, etc.) that are sent with the tax
return.
