Many programs and schools at Dartmouth have established procedures, with the
help of the International Office, for bringing internationals to campus. Please
for a complete overview of International Office procedures for the admission,
invitation, or hiring of non-U.S. citizens at Dartmouth. Please click here for a summary of
possible visa types and immigration options. If you are unaware of any
established procedures and are interested in admitting an international student
or employing an international researcher or professor within your department or
school, please direct your message to the appropriate advisor at international.office@dartmouth.edu
for information concerning visa options and institutional responsibilities. To
determine the appropriate advisor for your department or school please review
our International
Advisor Caseload Division in PDF format. If you are employing a non-U.S.
citizen, there are also important I-9 compliance issues to be aware
of. Please review our summary of Employment
Authorization Documentation Needed for Non-U.S. Citizens for more
information.
I-20 Form Information and Request (for undergraduate and graduate
students)
In addition to a Student I-20 Request form, which must be completed by the
department and is available upon request from the advisor, we will need
evidence of admission to Dartmouth College, and evidence of funding (personal
and / or institutional) equal to tuition, fees, living expenses, and
miscellaneous expenses. The student will use the I-20 form to apply for an F-1
visa at the nearest U.S. consulate in his/her home country. If the student is
presently in the US, at another institution, or in a different visa status,
please contact our office for information on how to proceed.
The International Graduate student intake form is available here:
International Graduate Student Intake form
DS-2019 Form Information and Request (for exchange students, research
scholars, and temporary visiting faculty)
We will need two initial forms: a DS-2019
Department Information Request (completed by Department) and a DS-2019
Student/Scholar Information Request (completed by
student/scholar). Please request these forms from the appropriate
advisor. In addition, we will also need a photocopy of the international's
passport ID page and a copy of the admission, appointment, or job offer letter
from Dartmouth College. The sponsoring department should complete the
department form, and the international should complete the student or scholar
form. If the international is funded by a source other than Dartmouth College
(personal, home institution, U.S. government agency, international
organization, home country agency, or government), then we will need a letter
from the funding source verifying the amount of the support.
Please note that citizens of certain countries, or those who show government
funding, may be found subject to a two-year home residency requirement at the
completion of their exchange program. The student, scholar, or faculty member
will use the DS-2019 form to apply for a J-1 exchange visitor visa at the
nearest U.S. consulate in their home country. If the student or scholar is
presently in the US, at another institution, or in a different visa status,
please contact our office for information on how to proceed.
H-1B Petition (for faculty and longer-term researchers)
An H-1B petition is an application by the College to the CIS for permission
to employ an international temporarily (for up to six years). To file an H-1B
petition, we will need three forms: an H-1B Actual Wage form (completed by
department), an H-1B Employment Information form (completed by department), and
an H-1B Employee Information request (completed by employee). These forms must
be completed, signed, and returned to our office, with a college check to pay
for the CIS filing fee of $320.00. The department should complete the Actual
Wage form, and the Employment Information form, and the new H employee should
complete the H Employee Information Request. In addition, we will need a
department letter of support. We have a template letter that we can send to
you, if requested.
Please note that the H-1B petition can take up to a month or two to prepare,
and an additional three months for the CIS to adjudicate. If you need the
petition adjudicated more quickly, the CIS does allow for "premium processing;"
however, this fee is an additional $1,000.00. Please contact our office
directly if you wish to pursue premium processing. We have included a link to a
general information sheet on H-1B petitions below as well, but feel free to
call or email
us if you have questions.
