Attacking Disease in the Developing World
Jamie Guth and Dr. Bill Aldis
October 14, 2006
10 am to noon
Kellogg Auditorium
How are the major health issues in developing countries identified and what
are the steps taken to combat them?
Two WHO specialists profile work done to prioritize and set the Millennium
Development Goals, a list of worldwide targets to improve health and
development, and how these goals are implemented through multiple partners.
The two specialists will provide examples of how disease needs are
identified and the role research plays in making a critical difference to
improving health. Case examples will be discussed in areas such as polio,
malaria and syphilis, using country examples across the globe, including Haiti,
Nigeria, Thailand, and India. Issues of public health in war and disaster
situations will also be covered, as well as comments on avian influenza.
Jamie Guth is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and is the communications
manager for the Special Programme for Research and Training. Her
organization is sponsored by UNICEF, UNDP, the World Bank, and the World Health
Organization. The Special Programmes for Research and Training has the
dual mission to set priorities for new strategies to combat diseases of the
poor and to build a research capacity in developing countries. Formerly
Jamie Guth worked at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
Dr. Bill Aldis is based in New Delhi, India, and is the Coordinator of
Health Policy and Research for the WHO Regional Office for South-East
Asia. He joined WHO full-time in 1993, first in Nigeria and then
Bangladesh working on child survival, and later as regional advisor for
emergencies for WHO African Region, and then as WHO's country representative to
Sierra Leone, Malawi and Thailand.
The cost is $10 per person. To reserve your seat(s) mail in the coupon
