Friday 9:30 – 11:30 AM
January 13 through March 3, 2006
Kendal @ Hanover Card Rm.
This study group will explore the puzzle of "faction" - the melding of fiction and fact - as it has appeared in six books dealing with women who lived (perhaps) in the western U.S. in the 19th century. A group of three or four participants will present a book to the class and then as a group we will discuss such issues as the bona fides of the author, the West as she experienced it and how, or if, the expectation of publication may have tempered "the truth" of the West of the time.
JOYCE GRIFFEN was born in Boulder, Colorado, and grew up in various small towns on the Western Slope of the Rockies. She graduated from the University of Colorado but went east to earn both her master's and doctor's degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. She returned immediately to the West where, for a good many years, she taught at Northern Arizona University. She moved to Kendal at Hanover in 1991, and this is her fifth ILEAD class.
