With all the heated discussions about war and politics, humor has seemed to have disappeared from our lives. Rereading (or reading for the first time) James Thurber is like a burst of sunshine after a drab winter. Thurber was a master stylist with an extraordinary and somewhat disturbing imagination. In addition he was a cartoonist with a unique style, unlike anyone else before or since. We will read from a group of his stories and cartoons selected by Garrison Keillor. Classes will be devoted to discussing our impressions from the reading; learning more about Thurber, his life and its relationship to his work; reviewing critical writings about his work; and in general just having a good time enjoying his genius.
DICK JUSTICE grew up in Ohio, Thurber’s home state. He received a B.A. degree in math from Washington & Jefferson College and did graduate work in English at the University of Chicago. He has since taken courses in subjects ranging from aerodynamics to Greek art. He retired in 1995, after a career in use of computers, serving the last twenty-seven years as executive in charge of technology for NASDAQ and the National Association of Securities Dealers.
