Sunset Song by Lewis Grassic Gibbon (the pen name of James Leslie Mitchell) was recently voted the best Scottish book of all time in a Scottish poll. The first part of Gibbon's trilogy, A Scot's Quair, was published in 1932 and is set in the rural area south of Aberdeen known as "The Mearns" during the first two decades of the Twentieth century. The novel follows the life of Chris Guthrie through her childhood, to marriage, children and the losses of the First World War, chronicling those changes in her life and those to her community, Kinraddie. Written in a blend of Scots and English, the prose is lyrical and musical.
We will warm our hearts this winter with this wonderful work!
