Even in the ancient world, political leaders recognized the importance of manipulating language to describe their actions. Today, with modern communications, spin doctors are at the core of our political world. This course examines how language influences the way we understand and judge the policies that affect our lives. We will look at examples in history, but the emphasis will be on understanding how language is used rather than on a partisan judgement of the policies themselves.
EVANGELINE MONROE is a retired Foreign Service Officer. While serving at U.S. embassies she learned that it was not enough to understand a foreign language, it was necessary to understand what lay behind the words of her interlocutors. Old habits die hard; she is still trying to sift through the words to understand what politicians really mean.
