For Adults Only: A Retrospective of Italian Neorealism in Film

Mark Lewis
Thursdays 2:30 – 5:00 PM
January 12 through February 23, 2006
Quail Hollow

Having been disappointed by so many contemporary films, I began to go back to a time when movies actually had something to say and were intended for an adult audience.  It was exciting to rediscover one of the "golden ages" of the movies - those films made in Italy during the post World War II era.  This course will focus on these neorealism films created by a group of extraordinary directors beginning with Rossellini's Open City, which deals with the liberation of Rome from fascist control.  We will also examine the works of DeSica, Fellini, Visconti and DeSantas, whose films are considered landmarks in the history of the cinema.

A study guide will be given out for each film and following each screening a discussion evaluation will ensue.

PLEASE NOTE:  All of these films are in Italian with English subtitles; thus relatively decent eyesight is recommended.

MARK LEWIS has, since he started sneaking away from high school to "go to the movies" in Manhattan, been somewhat of a film "junkie."  He has loved the movies since discovering this most accessible of artistic mediums.  Mark made a living by teaching history in high school and junior college.  He has lived in the Upper Valley since 1992.  He looks at films not as a didactic discipline but as a dynamic and visceral experience which he hopes to share with participants in this course.
