METAMORPHOSIS/TRANSFORMATION
LITERARY INSPIRATION FROM THE LIFE OF AN INSECT

As Vladimir Nabokov wrote: "Butterflies and literature are the two sweetest passions known to man."  We will explore this relationship by examining the life history of butterflies as well as selected literary works by Ovid, Kafka, Nabokov, Fowles, and others who drew their inspiration from the life of this insect.

The format will be illustrated lectures, readings and class discussion. The discussions and readings will examine the general concepts of metamorphosis, collecting, and obsession as exhibited in literature. The voracious appetite of the caterpillar and its wonderful metamorphosis into butterfly should inspire our reading and discussions.
