When the West Was Young

Scribner Jelliffe

Tuesdays 2:30 – 4:30 PM
January 11 through February 15, 2005
D.O.C. House

Selections taken from the accounts of three great historians:  the Persian invasion of Greece by Herodotus; Athenian ambitions toward empire as told by Thucydides; and Edward Gibbon's descriptions of Rome in chaos and decline.  Let there be occasion to plug in current terms such as "regime change," "special interest," "pre-emption," maybe even "pushing the envelope."  Let there be occasion to relish the grand scenes, the play of irony, the magnificent writings of the masters, lest we forget!

This course is six weeks and limited to twelve members for optimum discussion purposes.  Careful reading of the assigned passages is necessary for the full enjoyment of coming together.  The text for all the readings is available at the ILEAD office.

Class is limited to 12 members.

SCRIBNER JELLIFFE graduated from Dartmouth and obtained an MA from NYU in history before teaching in schools in this country and abroad.  As an adjunct to teaching, he has led Great Books discussion groups.
