International Terrorism and the 9/11 Commission

Charles Billo

Thursdays 2:30 – 4:30 PM
January 13 through February 17, 2005
D.O.C. House

This course will use the Report of the 9/11 Commission as a vantage point to examine both the root causes of the "new" terrorism (networked; more global in reach; and more lethal) and appropriate measures to counter this increasing menace to our national security.  The format will be a combination lecture/discussion exploration of such matters as the origins, objectives, and tactics of Al-Qaeda; sources of funding and support; strategies and options for addressing the terrorist challenge; and an assessment of current U.S. policies.  In addition to the 9/11 Commission Report on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States, a booklet of short weekly readings (distributed to participants prior to the course) as well as occasional documentary videos will form part of the instructional materials.  Brief reports by study group members on topics of interest will be encouraged.  This is an updated version of the course Charles Billo led in the winter 2004 term.

Class is limited to 12 members.

CHARLES BILLO is a consultant at Dartmouth's Institute for Security Technology Studies.  He and his wife live in Hanover.
