Gerard E. Jones

Tuesdays, Noon - 2:00 p.m.
January 11 - March 1, 2005
Location TBD

This course will consist of a discussion of the history of these two interesting countries. We will focus on the rise and fall of the Hapsburg Empire and the lives of Maria Theresa, Emperor Francis Joseph, Napoleon, Talleyrand and Metternich. Two sessions will feature suggestions of sites you may want to visit in Vienna and Budapest, with particular focus on Schonbrunn Palace. If time allows, we will discuss the significant contribution of artists, musicians and others who have enriched the culture of these countries. We propose to use multi-media extensively - films, music, etc. Professor Klaus Mladek, a Professor in Dartmouth College's German Studies Department, will give one class on a topic of mutual interest.

Class is limited to those participants going to Holland/Hungary in May 2005.
