Job has been called a masterpiece of literature; with poetry of profound insight and irony its author wrestles with issues arising from innocent suffering over against friends and the Almighty. In his play, J.B., MacLeish takes up the theme of Job to explore "the question of belief in life." "How is it possible to believe in the justice of God in a world in which the innocent perish in vast meaningless massacres, and brutal, dishonest men foul all the lovely things.” He gives a new answer, different from the biblical ones; Robert Frost, in his poem, "A Masque of Reason," another. Throughout the course we'll be wrestling with a story which has challenged and captivated the west almost since it was written.
The basic readings for the course are the biblical book of Job, Archibald MacLeish's play, J.B., and Robert Frost's poem, "A Masque of Reason."
The format is lively discussion with background material provided by the teacher. The readings are about 1-2 hours per session.
Class is limited to 12 members.
